OVERVIEW: Third Generation Gun Directors provide multi-sensor fire-control capabilities with high-resolution thermal imaging, CCD daylight optics, and integrated laser ranging. Operational from the late 1990s onward, they enable precise target tracking and engagement in all-weather, day/night conditions.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: These 3rd-generation systems combine cooled mid-wave or long-wave infrared sensors with high-resolution CCD video channels and eye-safe laser rangefinders. Designed for naval gunfire support and air defense, they allow passive target acquisition, automatic tracking, and fire-control cueing independent of radar emissions—vital in ECM-heavy or cluttered littoral environments. Integration with combat management systems enables rapid threat response and improved hit probability against air, surface, and shore targets.

ROLE SUMMARY:
Category: Electro-Optical Fire-Control Director
Primary Use: Multispectral gunfire direction under all-weather/day-night conditions
Function: Thermal/CCD imaging, laser ranging, and tracking
Platform: Naval vessels (corvettes to destroyers), some coastal or fixed air defense sites
Integration: Integrated with radar/EO fire-control networks and combat management systems
